Kestrels & Peregrines - Year 3
In Kestrels and Peregrines classes we are guided by the
National Curriculum and by the Cornerstones curriculum which we follow as a
school. Each term – or half term – we launch our new topic with a WOW day or
activity. This sometimes involves an educational visit or an exciting and
engaging activity which takes place in school. Home learning tasks are also
based on the topic with English, maths and other home learning tasks added.
English lessons are based around the topic where
possible but also include other aspects of the English National Curriculum.
Spelling is taught twice a week and is based on the Oxford Owl spelling
programme and the children’s weekly spelling lists and home learning activities
are based on this. In addition to weekly spellings, we also send home ‘red
spelling words’ every half term. These red spelling words are taken from the
Year 3 and 4 word lists in the National Curriculum. Reading is taught as a
whole class and some children read to an adult on a daily 1:1 basis or with a
‘Reading Champion’ who comes into school on a weekly basis. The children visit
the school library every week and are encouraged to take a book home. There is
a reward system in place for those children who read at home on a regular basis
and who record it in their reading record.
Maths is taught as a whole class and follows the
National Curriculum. Throughout the year the children will cover: Number:
(including Place Value; Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division
and Fractions); Measurement (including Money, Length and Perimeter, Mass and
Capacity and Time); Statistics (including interpretation and presention of data
using bar charts, pictograms and tables) and Geometry (including the properties
of shape). We encourage the use of manipulatives and drawings to help the
children with conceptual understanding. We also try to encourage the children
to learn their times tables.
Other curriculum areas are taught through the topic
except RE (which is taught in a block each half term) and Music (which is
taught weekly by a specialist music teacher). The children also have regular
access to our Forest School area. Our topics for this year are:
AUTUMN – Predator SPRING – Scrumdiddlyumptious
SUMMER 1 - Gods and Mortals SUMMER
2 – Tribal Tales
The first half term was a whole-school topic called
‘Circus’ and this coincided with a circus being based in school.
